Abstract Ten pure fluids (R134, R134a, R245cb, R227ea, R236fa, RE134, R236ea, R245fa, R245ca, and R123) and three blends are analyzed as refrigerants for high-temperature heat pumps at three sets of evaporating/condensing temperatures: 7/80 deg C, 20/100 deg C, and 30/120 deg C. Aside from the commonly used thermodynamic analytical criteria, design criteria based on an R410a a scroll air-conditioning and heat-pump compressor are applied: discharge pressure of 3.4 MPa continuous and 4.1 to 4.5 MPa short-time, pressure ratio of 10, and isentropic discharge temperature at 130-145 deg C. The heat cost reflecting the market conditions is used to make the final selection.
