Abstract A field test has been performed to evaluate EPA Proposed Method 0040 (Sampling of Principal Organic Hazardous Constituents from Combustion Sources Using Tedlar Bags), a method for the collection of volatile organic compounds above the range of EPA Method 0030 (VOST). In the laboratory studies, a design for the sampling train was developed and the train was evaluated using dynamic spiking techniques. An analytical methodology using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was also developed. A field test of the methodology was performed to determine the systematic error (bias) and random error (precision) under stationary source sampling conditions. Four similar trains were operated using a quadruplicate sampling probe, with dynamic spiking of two trains with volatile organic compounds, while sampling emissions from a coal combustion source. Analytical data were statistically evaluated according EPA Method 301. Fifteen of eighteen volatile organic test compounds met Method 301 acceptance criteria for performance.
