Abstract Granular activated carbon (GAC) is an effective treatment technique for the removal of some toxic organics from drinking water or wastewater, however, it can be a relatively expensive process, especially if it is designed improperly. A rapid method for the design of large-scale fixed-bed adsorbers from small column studies, known as the rapid small-scale column test (RSSCT), has been developed and evaluated. The benefits of the RSSCT and the cost savings which is associated with proper design make it a very attractive alternative to a pilot study.
