Abstract The conservation and management of neotropical migratory birds needs to include a landscape perspective. Landscape ecology represents a renewed interest in the development and dynamics of landscape mosaics, the effects of landscape patterns on species, biotic interactions and ecological processes, and how landscape heterogeneity can be managed to benefit society. For neotropical migratory birds, landscapes occupy the spatial scales intermediate between an individual's territory or home work has improved the conceptual basis and quantitative methods regions. Recent work has improved the conceptual basis and quantitative methods for landscape studies. However empirical information for neotropical migratory birds is largely based on short-term, distributional studies in central and northeastern hardwood forests during the breeding season. More detailed and geographically-extensive landscape studies of neotropical migratory birds during the breeding season are needed to provide regionally-specific information to compare among regions.
