Abstract The paper gives results of research to: determine, under constant temperature, relative humidity, and air flow test conditions, whether fungal spore levels on heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) duct material surfaces could be reduced substantially by thorough vacuum cleaning; and evaluate whether subsequent fungal growth would be limited or contained by a single mechanical cleaning treatment. Three fiberglass duct materials were tested. The results showed that notable amounts of surface dust were removed, and surface spore levels could be reduced in the short term on all materials by vacuuming. However, regrowth occurred within 6-12 weeks.
