Abstract A quantitative theory was developed to predict coupled mass and energy transport phenomena during breathing of hygroscopic aerosol-laden air, and was applied to simulate exhalation (as well as inhalation) under different boundary conditions (BCs). It is shown that wall temperature may influence particle/vapor interaction, but the impact appears to be stronger at low particle concentration. At the same time, aerosol-induced (on the particle surface) vapor evaporation and condensation at high particle concentrations will influence strongly the air temperature and relative humidity patterns within the respiratory system.
