Abstract On January 23, 2003, nearly 50 senior state agency officials, state and federal legislative aides, and representatives of key associations and organizations in Michigan participated in a day-long policy roundtable to link brownfields redevelopment with greenfields protection. The event illustrated Michigan’s leadership in addressing a pressing environmental and socioeconomic problem facing most Great Lakes communities and the nation at large – how to focus more money and energy on redeveloping our older urban areas while protecting outlying agricultural and open space areas.
