Abstract | Synthesizing a wastewater treatment system design involves selecting the combination, arrangement, and sizing of unit treatment processes that will meet all treatment objectives. A computer-based method for the initial phase of treatment system design is developed. It identifies arrangements of alternative unit processes whose overall performance index falls within a specified limit. The problem is approached using the artificial intelligence paradigm of algorithmic state space search guided by knowledge-based heuristics. An experimental PROLOG program illustrates how the method may be implemented for a wide variety of wastewater treatment design problems. |
