Abstract |
The U.S. EPA's Office of Toxic Substance (OTS) maintains a unique capability for monitoring human exposure to potentially toxic substances through the National Human Adipose Tissue Survey (NHATS). This report deals specifically with the measurement of semivolatile organic chemicals in composited adipose tissue specimens from the FY82 NHATS repository. Quantitative data for organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated buphenyls (PCBs), polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, phthalate esters, and phosphate triesters were determined for each composite. The frequencies of detection for each of the compounds based on the specific age group and census division are detailed in the report. The feasibility of determining other halogenated aromatic compounds using this method was demonstrated through the analysis of spiked adipose tissue samples. |
