Abstract |
Current solid waste collection practices do not differ significantly from those used at the turn of the century. This lag in the development of new technologies has had a marked economic impact. Ways must be found, therefore, to maximize efficiency while minimizing costs. The first part of the report concentrates on the haul operation through a study of mathematical models for the location or selection of disposal sites and the allocation of collection territories thereto. The second part is concerned with an operational analysis of the collection and haul operations combined, done with the use of two computer programs expecially written for the simulation of the operation of refuse systems.
