Abstract |
This study is concerned with utilizing chemical degradation/detoxification methods for the disposal of small quantities of pesticide wastes. A primary objective of the study is to develop procedures to advise pesticide users of safe, readily available chemical methods for pesticide disposal. Another objective is to delineate the hazards associated with pesticide disposal by chemical methods, and warn the layman against the indiscriminate use of chemical disposal methods based on incomplete knowledge of the degradation products or the hazardous nature of the detoxifying reagents. Chemical degradation information on twenty different pesticides, representing each of the major pesticide classes, is discussed. Chemical degradation procedures that can be used by the laymen are described for naled, diazinon, Guthion, malathion, carbaryl, captan, and atrazine, but not for Dursban, methyl parathion, maneb, alachlor (Lasso), diuron, picloram, trifluralin, methoxychlor, chlordane, toxaphene, 2,4-D, amiben(chloramben), and pentachlorophenol. |
