Abstract | The discussion is mainly concerned with the effects of aerosols in the community atmosphere as distinguished from the occupational environment. Research in the latter area, however, at present constitutes our only knowledge for many biological effects. Material has been gathered from a literature review of some 60 sources and is presented in summary style. The subjects considered are the biological, physical and economic effects of atmospheric pollutant aerosols, referring only to the particulate phase, either solid or liquid. Consideration is given to the possible carrier and/or catalytic nature of particulates which sometimes may account for the detrimental effects attributed to the aerosol, in both biological and physical systems.
