Briefly summarized is research on the effects of foreign components on the precipitation of phosphate by aluminum and precipitation of phosphate by iron. The effectiveness of hydroxy-aluminum polymers to precipitate phosphate is greatly influenced by the ratio of phosphate to aluminum and also by the nature and the concentration of the foreign components (sulfate, fluoride, kaolinite and montmorillonite) present. Phosphate precipitation was greatly improved in some cases while reduced in others. Samples were prepared by mixing Fe (NO3)3, NaH2PO4 and NaOH together and then analyzed for the concentrations of phosphate and iron remaining in solution and the composition of the precipitate.
