Abstract |
This report describes a laboratory study of liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) method for the analysis of volatile organic compounds in water. The objectives of the study were to examine various method variables, including choice of solvent; solvent to water ratio; matrix pH and ionic strength; and the presence of quenching agents and methanol. The initial phase of the study emphasized optimization of the LLE method for a group of four THMs and other organohalides; but in latter portions of the study, the list of potential analytes was enlarged to include other organohalides and certain aromatics. This necessitated the exploration of capillary chromatographic techniques for the analysis of complex mixtures of the analytes. |
