The study evaluated a Pulsed-Bed Filter (PBF) for filtration of municipal primary effluent (TSS equals 160 mg/l, COD = 390 mg/l). Five operating parameters were varied to note the effect on performance: the number of air pulses between backwashes; the time between each air pulse; the concentration of detergent used to clean the filter sand; the frequency of cleaning; and the surface loading rate. Six parameters were used to measure performance: TSS, COD, and turbidity percent removals; the length of a filter run; the ratio of filtrate water pumped for air pulsing and backwashing to total influent flow; and the ratio of filtrate water wasted to total influent flow. Operational problems were also noted during the evaluation. |
