Abstract | The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is required by the Clean Water Act (as amended) and the June 1976 NRDC/EPA Settlement Agreement to set water quality criteria for 65 toxic priority pollutants. The effort to determine criteria requires the analysis of large quantities of data dealing with the effects of toxic substances on aquatic organisms and humans. To determine these criteria, it is necessary to quantify human exposure through fish consumption and drinking water intake. The report summarizes the findings of a literature search to identify sources of information on per capita fish consumption in the United States and an analysis of data tapes pertaining to a survey of fish consumption. |
