Abstract |
The state of technology of electrostatic precipitation for particulate emission control is reported. The report is intended to serve as a basic handbook on the subject of electrostatic precipitation covering the entire system including fundamental theory, design, operation, and application. Its purpose is to provide a source of information that will be of benefit to the researcher, manufacturer, and user of electrostatic precipitators. The systems study included a review of literature pertaining to electrostatic precipitation, a comprehensive review of precipitator fundamentals, a survey and review of the use of precipitators in each of eight major application areas, and a review of the potential for electrostatic precipitators in new applications. In order to provide information useful to a wide range of users, this manual is organized to present a general review of the precipitation process, with qualitative relationships between the various precipitator functions, and a detailed quantitative analysis of each of the system functions. Particular emphasis is placed on the validity of the theoretical derivations in view of the assumptions made and the significance of the interaction of variables of importance in precipitator operation. Further discussions include mechanical design considerations, energization equipment, gas flow, operational problems, and the current utilization of precipitators in the major application areas.
