Abstract | The Old Springfield Landfill site is a 27-acre inactive municipal/industrial landfill approximately one mile from the Springfield city center in Windsor County, Vermont. The site was closed in 1968, and subsequently sold and developed for use as a mobile home park. A nearby resident's complaint about foul-smelling water prompted an investigation of the site by the State, which revealed VOC contamination in a nearby spring and the residential well. Operable unit one is documented in a 1988 Record of Decision (ROD) which addressed management of migration of the contaminated seeps and ground water from the site and required that additional studies would be conducted to determine the source control remedy for the site. The second operable unit ROD documents the source control remedy, which addresses the risks associated with the inhalation of landfill gases and dermal contact with and ingestion of contaminated soil. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the soil and ground water are VOCs including benzene, PCE, TCE, toluene, and xylenes and other organics including PAHs and PCBs. |
