Abstract | In three Rhode Island rivers, sets of upstream-downstream stations from industrial pollution sources were investigated for annual trends in chemical-physical factors, hydrology, and plant biota. Periphyton of 1-,2-, and 4-week-immersed glass slides was the main type sample, but epipelic, attached benthic, and macrophyte plants were also sampled. Correlation coefficients were computed among the factors, and correlations among predominate taxa as well as among them and the factors are in preparation. Of over 150 microalgal species, nine sensitive to textile mill effluents were detected. Of these Scenedesmus dimorphus and S. quadricauda when present at these stations were indicators of mill pollution. (Author) |
