Abstract |
The adsorption of calcium ion onto hydrous iron oxide was investigated. The adsorption and desorption rates are fast, thus indiciating that hydrous oxide surfaces act as metal ion buffering agents in natural water systems. Competitive adsorption studies indicate that calcium ion can displace adsorbed heavy metals such as cadmium. The applicability of a calcium ion selective electrode to environmental monitoring was also investigated. The electrode is subject to interference from phenolic-type compounds and thus not suitable for use in waters where these compounds may be present. |
