Abstract |
The objective of this project was to evaluate the removal of low level cyanide in petroleum refinery wastewater by the addition of powdered activated carbon and cupric chloride to an activated sludge unit. The activated carbon and cupric chloride act as a catalyst in the oxidation and destruction of the cyanides. A two-phase study was carried out to develop the process. The first phase consisted of a bench-scale study using solutions of metal-cyanide complexes in order to determine the mechanics of cyanide destruction. The second phase consisted of bench-scale tests using actual refinery wastes. |
