Abstract
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is sponsoring the Complex Terrain Model Development program, a multi-year integrated program to develop and validate practical plume dispersion models of known reliability and accuracy for simulating one-hour average ground-level concentrations downwind of elevated sources during stable atmospheric conditions in complex terrain. The first major component of the Complex Terrain Model Development program was a field study conducted during the fall of 1980 at Cinder Cone Butte, a roughly axisymmetric, isolated 100-meter-tall hill located in the broad Snake River Basin near Boise, Idaho. The field program consisted of ten flow visualization experiments and eighteen multi-hour tracer gas experiments conducted during stable flow conditions. This report presents an overview of the Cinder Cone Butte field program and the results of the modeling analyses completed through June 1, 1981. The objectives of this phase of the modeling program were to begin the development of new dispersion models using the Cinder Cone Butte data base and to compare their performance with existing complex terrain dispersion models.
