Abstract | The manual provides guidance to states and utilities for implementing the Surface Water Treatment Rule (SWTR) which was promulgated in June 1989. Subject areas include (1) determination of whether a groundwater is under the direct influence of surface water, (2) compliance determinations for systems filtering or not filtering, (3) reporting requirements including recommended tables for gathering compliance data, (4) public notification and (5) exemptions. Information is provided for how to conduct tracer studies for determining disinfection contact time and for using CT values to determine disinfection inactivation efficiencies for Giardia cysts and viruses. Guidelines are given for evaluating filtration performance, including innovative technologies, and point of entry devices. Guidelines for conducting sanitary surveys, and maintaining effective watershed control programs are also given. |
