Abstract | The 135-acre Carrier Air Conditioning site is an active manufacturing facility in the Town of Collierville, Shelby County, Tennessee. In 1967, Collierville leased the site property, buildings, and equipment to Carrier to manufacture residential heating and air-conditioning units. During the manufacturing process, aluminum sheeting is stamped and assembled with copper tubing to form air heat exchangers. Stamping and forming oils and dirt are removed prior to assembly. Until recently, trichloroethylene (TCE) was used onsite as the primary solvent for degreasing and cleaning parts. The ROD addresses a final remedy for the contaminated soil, sludge, and ground water at the Carrier facility and is the only ROD planned for the site. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the soil, sludge, and ground water are VOCs, including TCE and PCE; and metals, including lead and zinc. |
