Abstract | The 4.4-acre White Chemical site is a former chemical manufacturing facility in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey. From 1983 to 1990, White Chemical Corporation (WCC) used the site to manufacture acid chlorides and flame retardant compounds. As a result of State inspections, a number of investigations were initiated by the State and EPA. In 1989, the State conducted several site investigations and issued notices of violation for improper management and storage of hazardous waste. As a result of WCC's failure to respond to any State notices or directives, the State initiated a removal action to stabilize the site. The Record of Decision (ROD) addresses interim remedial measures for surface contamination. A future ROD will address additional remedial measures deemed necessary as a result of a comprehensive RI/FS. The primary contaminants of concern identified in the tanks, drums, and containers are VOCs including benzene and xylenes, other organics, inorganics, and shock-sensitive compounds. |
