Abstract |
The 159-acre South Macomb Disposal No. 9, 9A site contains two inactive municipal landfills in Macomb Township, Macomb County, Michigan. Until 1989, the estimated 34 residents in the immediate vicinity of the site used shallow and intermediate aquifers associated with contamination from landfills as their drinking water supply. From 1968 to 1975, South Macomb Disposal Authority (SMDA), a municipal corporation, used the site to facilitate the management and disposal of municipal refuse for five towns in Macomb County. As a result of reported fish kills and continued reports of leachate seepage into McBride Drain, a number of State investigations between 1976 and 1982 verified that the site was the source of the leachate problem and prompted SMDA to upgrade and expand leachate collection systems along various portions of area 9A. The Record of Decision (ROD) addresses onsite contaminated ground water as Operable Unit 1 (OU1). A future ROD will address the landfill contents as OU2. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the ground water are VOCs including benzene and toluene; other organics including phenols; and metals including arsenic and chromium. The selected remedial action for the site is included. |
