Abstract |
The remedial investigation and feasibility study (RI/FS) process represents the methodology that the Superfund program has established for characterizing the nature and extent of risks posed by uncontrolled hazardous waste sites and for evaluating potential remedial options. The approach should be viewed as a dynamic flexible process that can and should be tailored to specific circumstances of individual sites. The objective of the RI/FS process is not the unobtainable goal of removing all uncertainty, but rather to gather information sufficient to support an informed risk management decision regarding which remedy appears to be most appropriate for a given site. The appropriate level of analysis to meet the objective can only be reached through constant strategic thinking and careful planning concerning the essential data needed to reach a remedy selection decision. |
