The report is a review of new technical information, relevant to the environmental effects of thermal discharges into Lake Michigan, which is not reflected in the existing record of the Lake Michigan Enforcement Conference. Most of these discharges are from electric power plants. The report discusses separately the physical and biological aspects of thermal discharges. It includes descriptions of preoperational field studies, thermal-bar measurements, field measurements of the physical and biological characteristics of thermal discharges, mathematical modeling techniques, laboratory tests on biological effects of heated water, intake and outfall designs, power plant operational data, analyses of environmental effects and cost estimates of closed-cycle cooling systems, and chemical discharges from both fossil and nuclear power plants. The authors specifically refrained from drawing conclusions from the material. (Author)
