Abstract |
The Presque Isle site is located on the Presque Isle State Park Peninsula within the city of Erie, Erie County, Pennsylvania. The site consists of a plugged, abandoned natural gas well encompassing an area of approximately 100 sq ft. In the early 1970s, the Erie County Health Department noted a seep discharging a noxious, hydrogen sulfide-bearing black liquid. Investigations focused around whether the liquid was a natural brine emanating from the underlying Bass Island geologic formation, or was related to the deep well injection of spent paper pulping liquid by a nearby paper mill. The Presque Isle well was plugged in 1982, and subsequent investigations have revealed no further release of the hazardous liquid to the environment. No direct relationship between paper mill injection activities and the original release has been established. EPA determined that no significant risk or threat to public health and the environment exists and therefore no further action will be taken at this site. There are no implementation issues or costs associated with this no action remedy. |
