Abstract |
The report summarizes existing data on the chemical and physical characteristics of ashes produced by the burning of coal in steam-electric generating plants. It summarizes several recent coal or ash characterization studies, emphasizing the elemental chemical composition, particularly trace inorganic constituents. The studies agree generally on partitioning of trace elements between bottom ash, fly ash, and flue gas. The report examines coal and ash analysis methods, to aid in evaluating and comparing results from studies that do not use identical analytical methods. The need for a standard set of analytical procedures for coal and ash is evident. The report also summarizes the physical and chemical characteristics of sulfur dioxide scrubbing sludges, which are becoming a significant portion of total power plant residues. |
