Abstract
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is developing a maximum achievable control technology (MACT) standard to reduce hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) from the iron and steel foundries source category. To support this rulemaking, EPAs Innovative Strategies and Economics Group (ISEG) has conducted an economic impact analysis (EIA) to assess the potential costs of the rule. This report documents the methods and results of this EIA. In 1997, the United States shipped over 12 million short tons of iron and steel castings. These castings are used in a variety of industries including automotive, aerospace, construction, appliances, and hardware.

Contents Notes
This report evaluates the economic impacts of the proposed NESHAP for melting furnace; scrap preheating; pouring, cooling and shakeout (PCS); cold and core coating; and mold and core making operations at iron foundries. The social costs of the rule are estimated by incorporating the expected costs of compliance to a partial equilibrium model of th eU.S. iron and steel industry and projecting the market impacts for iron and steel castings and related products. The report also provides the screening analysis for small business impacts.
