Abstract | Environmental effects of alternatives to abate wastewater pollution in the twelve watersheds of the Topeka, Kansas Metropolitan Area were evaluated. Alternatives considered for each watershed include: No Action, rehabilitation of existing facilities (in areas already served by such facilities), modified collection/treatment, and regionalized collection/transport. Adverse impacts of recommended alternatives are construction-related erosion, sedimentation and riparian habitat damage associated with construction of sewers in stream corridors. Cost impacts will be moderate. Beneficial impacts include surface and groundwater quality improvement, elimination of failing septic systems, and coordination of land use planning efforts. |
