Abstract |
Size composition of substrates used by chinook salmon for spawning in the South Fork Salmon River, the main Salmon River and tributaries of the Middle Fork Salmon River, ID was determined. Substrates used by resident trout were analyzed for streams in the Boise and Payette River drainages. These analyses were made over time and space to determine particle sizes preferred by spawning salmon, yearly differences in sizes used by these salmon, the size differences used by spring and summer chinook salmon, and differences between channel sediments used by chinook salmon for spawning and those substrates occupied by trout. Use of the geometric mean particle diameter method is presented as a companion measurement to 'percent fines' for an easier and more complete analysis of sediments used for spawning. |
