Abstract | The 230-acre St. Louis River site (also known as the St. Louis River/Interlake Duluth Tar site) is on the north bank of the St. Louis River in Duluth, Minnesota, with portions of the site within the 100-year floodplain. This site is the former location of several pig iron and coking plants, as well as separate tar and chemical companies, which used byproducts from the plants. Soil and underlying ground water are contaminated with high levels of PAHs as a result of past onsite disposal activities. The Record of Decision (ROD) addresses Operable Unit 1 (OU1), the remediation of the onsite tar seeps, which are a potential source of ground water and surface water contamination. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the soil are organics including PAHs. |
