Abstract |
The hypothesis tested is: the recreational use of streams and, therefore, the amount of regional income generated by recreation-related expenditures are directly related to stream water quality in the area. Data were gathered about in-stream water quality and recreational use of streams for thirty areas of Pennsylvania. Water quality indicators were dissolved oxygen content, pH value, and the temperature of the stream water. Expenditures by sector within the local area were converted to estimates of regional income generated through the use of sectoral regional income multipliers adapted from an inter-industry study of a Pennsylvania county. The results indicated a positive correlation between in-stream water quality and the amount of regional income generated by recreation related expenditures. |
