Abstract |
The Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency formed an Interagency Working Group on July 5, 1974, to develop guidance to reduce unnecessary radiation exposures from the use of x rays in the healing arts in Federal health care facilities. The consensus of this group was that it is desirable and possible to reduce exposure from diagnostic uses of x rays by: (1) eliminating clinically unproductive examinations, (2) assuring the use of optimal technic when examinations are performed, and (3) requiring appropriate equipment to be used. As a result of this consensus a Subcommittee was formed to examine the use of equipment and technic to perform medical and dental x-ray examinations and to make recommendations for guidance to assure that diagnostic quality radiographs are produced with minimal patient exposure. The recommendations made herein are believed to be basic to assuring that these considerations are met in Federal health care facilities. |
