Abstract |
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Emission Standards Division (ESD) is investigating the lime manufacturing industry to identify and quantify hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) emitted from lime kilns. The primary objective was to characterize HAP emissions from two lime kilns at the Chemical Lime Company's facility located in Montevallo, Alabama. Based on the pollutant concentrations and emission rates calculated from the results of the screening tests, some of the kilns may be selected by EPA for further testing. The tests were conducted to quantify the uncontrolled and controlled air emissions of hydrogen chloride (HCI), total hydrocarbons (THC), and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDDs/PCDFs). Emissions from each kiln were controlled by a baghouse dedicated to each kiln. Over a two-day period, testing was conducted at each baghouse inlet and at the common stack. Inlet and outlet runs on each kiln were conducted simultaneously. Oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) were also monitored at each location. |
