General information is presented on the sanitary landfill as an effective solid waste disposal method. Emphasis is on areas of planning, design, operation, economics, equipment requirements, and public health. Criteria for selecting a site are developed, as well as general guidelines for the operation of a successful landfill. Public health aspects and nuisance control are stressed; their relation to initial landfill design and operation is shown. On-site facilities and equipment requirements are detailed. Initial investment and operation costs are broken down into outline form. A brief account of factors affecting a completed sanitary landfill includes comparative lists of advantages and disadvantages with this method of disposal. Illustrations are included. |
