Abstract |
Sixteen papers delivered by USA and USSR scientists at a symposium are presented. The effect of low pH on aquatic invertebrates and the use of fish behavior in comparing toxic effects of chemicals are examined. The production and excretion of ammonia by fish, the relationship between carbon dioxide excretion and ammonia toxicity, and the acute toxicity of iron cyanides and thiocyanate to trout are discussed. Mechanisms of organophosphorus pesticide resistance are analyzed. Biological monitoring and testing of surface waters and effluent is discussed and a complex effluents toxicity information system is described. Processes in the formation of water quality and trends in the development of water' quality in the two countries are outlined. Pollution problems from toxic organic contaminants from point and nonpoint sources in the North American Great Lakes are examined. Agricultural water quality management, including the use of simulation models, is discussed. |
