Abstract
Improved techniques for sampling and analyzing volatile organic compounds in the ambient air were developed and evaluated. Emphasis was placed on techniques for halocarbons and other compounds known or suspected of being carcinogenic. Areas of investigation included (a) the evaluation of XAD-2, charcoal and Tenax GC sorbents for in situ formation on halogenated organics during the sampling of air containing chlorine and olefins; (b) the development and testing of a cryoheater module for a thermal desorptions inlet-manifold; and (c) the characterization and quantification of hazardous organic vapors in ambient air collected at several different geographical areas within the continental United States.
