Abstract |
The first section of this report describes the needs, objectives, and constraints of monitoring groundwater quality with particular emphasis on the problem as viewed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, given its legislative mandates in the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 (PL 92-500), and the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974. The second section develops a methodology for monitoring groundwater quality degradation resulting from man's activities. The methodology is presented in the form of a series of procedural steps arranged in chronological order. By so doing, a straightforward sequence of actions is outlined which can lead to a groundwater pollution monitoring program in a given area. The third and final section of the report provides information on groundwater quality. A description is given of the geologic framework governing the movement of groundwater, and natural underground water quality. The occurrence of groundwater pollution, including its distribution, mechanisms, attenuation, evaluation, and trends is presented. The constituents in polluted groundwater and the various sources and causes of pollution are reviewed. |
