Abstract
A pilot plant study was carried out which demonstrated the effectiveness and economic feasibility of a unique ion exchange process referred to as 'acid retardation' for purifying spent phosphoric acid used in bright finishing aluminum parts. A continuous ion exchange system was employed to separated the aluminum contamination from a spent phosphoric acid waste obtained from a manufacturing plant. The anion resin accomplishes the separation by retarding the phosphoric acid as the processing solution flows through the bed. The aluminum remains in the waste solution and passes out of the column in the effluent. The acid is then eluted from the bed with water, eliminating the use of chemicals which are needed to regenerate the resin in conventional ion exchange systems.
