The paper describes the laboratory and support system, the exposure chambers, the computer system, and the hydroponic nursery built to accomplish research on uptake, translocation, and metabolism of toxic organic chemicals by plants. Understanding these processes and the physiological driving mechanisms is essential to predict food chain contamination and environmental damage from various agricultural and industrial pollutants. Since the chemicals of interest are toxic and studies generally include 14C as a label for monitoring chemical kinetics, containment was an important criterion. Containment and safety considerations are included. |
