Abstract | The historical growth of the demand for electrical power, the trends in selection of power plant fuels by geographic distribution, projections of power demand growth into the twenty-first century, and the potential impacts on national air quality resulting from the various alternatives of fuel usage are explored. In particular, power plants scheduled for construction from mid-1971 onward are surveyed to provide a basis for estimating the impact of national emission standards for sulfur dioxide on the electrical generating industry. Total installed power capacity will increase from about 320,000 megawatts in 1970 to about 1,000,000 megawatts in 1990, about 1,500,000 in 2000, and 5,200,000 in 2050. Fossil fuels supply about 83 percent of utility power in 1970. Fossil fuel use will decrease to about 50 percent in 2000 and to about 11 percent in 2050, while nuclear power will increase from the present 3 percent to about 45 percent in 2000 and to about 88 percent in 2050.
