Abstract
While this report deals primarily with methods of extracting oil from under piers, it is recognized that simple extraction is not enough, and that the oil should also be removed from the environment. Therefore considerable attention has been paid to driving the oil out in such a way that it can be picked up. The primary means of extraction are by the establishment of artificial currents under the contaminated pier, and a number of methods are suggested to cope with various types of pier substructure. Some other possible approaches, not involving flushing by artificial currents, are also discussed. These include: uses of chemicals, sinking, air entrainment and entombment. A generalized description of pier structures is also included. Author
