Abstract |
Geonets have become a popular component of leak detection systems at surface impoundments, waste piles, landfills and heap leach systems. They provide a reasonable alternative to gravel drainage designs which become costly when large quantities of leachate are anticipated. The paper examines the potential increase in in-plane flow by placing two layers of geonet materials atop one another. The increase in flow was measured for three different cross sections: Geomembrane overlain by double geonets overlain by geomembrane; geomembrane overlain by double geonets overlain by geotextile and sand; geomembrane overlain by double geonets overlain by geotextile and clay. The effect of soil intrusion was studied on the applicable cross sections. Compressive strength of double geonets were studied to determine the limits of applicability, and shear testing was performed to evaluate constructability and stability. |
