Abstract | The research goal was to determine the usefulness of the fluidised combustion system in reducing the emission of sulfur and nitrogen oxides, and particulates from the combustion of coal. The following work is described: Experiments on a number of pilot-scale combustors to measure the effect on emission of a selected range of process conditions, e.g. coal type, additive (limestone/dolomite) to retain sulfur, combustion conditions, plant scale, and design features; Experiments on selected pilot-scale combustors to assess the extent to which the addition of limestone or dolomite to coal in a fluidised bed influences corrosion; Laboratory scale experiments to characterise the coals and additives used; and Development of a mathematical model to assist in correlating the factors influencing the pollution control characteristics of a fluidised combustion system. |
