Abstract
The acute toxicity of neutral oils from bromodichlorobenzene hydrolysis has been investigated. Summary data indicate these mixtures are mildly irritating to the eyes of albino rabbits, but are not a primary skin irritant in this species. The minimum lethal dose administered by the dermal route to rabbits was less than 20,000 mg/kg, but greater than 10,000 mg/kg. Dose-related effects included dermal irritation, hypoactivity, decreased limb tone, ataxia, tremors, impaired righting reflex, purulent nasal discharge and death. Acute oral LD50 values were 2187 (1819 to 2630) mg/kg for male rats, 1995 (1728 to 2304) mg/kg for female rats, and the combined value, 2089 (1905 to 2290) mg/kg. Most deaths occurred within the 1st 4 days after dosing. All treated animals displayed diarrhea. Treatment at the higher dose levels (3980 and 6308 mg/kg) led to toxic signs similar to those from dermal exposure.
