Abstract |
Groups of 50 male Sprague-Dawley rats and 15 male New Zealand white rabbits were exposed by inhalation for 7 hours/day, 5 days/week for 6 months to nitromethane (exposure concentrations of 100 and 750 ppm) or 2-nitropropane (25 and 200 ppm). Exposure to nitromethane caused reduced body weight gain and slightly depressed hematocrit and hemoglobin levels in high-dose rats, and in rabbits it induced elevated ornithine carbamyl transferase and possibly depressed hemoglobin levels. Some evidence of pulmonary edema and other pulmonary abnormalities were seen at 1 month post-treatment in rabbits of both dose groups. Exposure to 2-nitropropane induced elevated ornithine carbamyl transferase in high-dose rabbits but not rats. Liver weights were elevated in high-dose animals of both species, accompanied by severe neoplastic changes in livers of rats. |
