Abstract | Several modifications of the activated sludge process incorporating single, dual and three sludge systems were evaluated for nitrification and denitrification in a 0.2 mgd pilot plant. Results indicate that the three sludge system provides the most dependable, consistent operation although it is slightly more expensive in capital costs. Preliminary results of nitrification and denitrification rate dependence upon temperature, design considerations, oxygen uptake rates, surface overflow rates, and solids production rates are presented and discussed.
